Our pantry started in 2018 with handing out paper sacks full of food. Back then, we served 15-20 households per week inside our building. Before the pandemic we had grown to serve 60-70 households per week. When stay-at-home orders began in 2020, we mobilized into a drive thru model to keep our volunteers and our neighbors safe. Our numbers steadily grew during that time. With the continued hits to our economy, we now serve approximately 240-260 households per week.
ICOA is in a food insecure neighborhood where the schools qualify as Title I schools. We are a Harvesters partner pantry and work with other pantries in our area to help meet food needs in our community. In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, we served 1,700 households. That increased to 4,190 in 2020, 5,015 in 2021, 7,630 in 2022, and over 5,100 households by May 2023.
In 2022, ICOA acquired 421,296 pounds of food and household goods from Harvesters valued at $808,999.80! ICOA also received more than 105,000 pounds of food from area churches, schools, other organizations, and individuals in 2022. This food created about 438,850 meals! (One meal equals approximately 1.2 pounds of food.)
The number of households served in 2023 have continued to grow. Through May 2023 we served over 5,100 households (some households received food one time per month, while others received food less frequently, or only once).
The pantry is open Tuesday mornings from 9:00 – 11:15 am. Except for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. There may be weeks where we are forced to close due to inclement weather.
