Naturalization is an important milestone in the path toward U.S. citizenship. The decision to apply for citizenship is a very personal one. To help you prepare, ICOA offers English and citizenship classes.
After a few of the early English students at Immanuel mentioned an interest in becoming U.S. citizens, Immanuel began U.S. citizenship classes. Since the U.S. government conducts citizenship interviews in the English language, students need to read, write, and speak English.
Some students take this class with the goal of becoming a U.S. citizen, others take it, so they are able to help a friend or relative study in their quest to become a U.S. citizen.
“I want to vote in the next election.”
During U.S. citizenship class, we study the possible 100 questions that may be asked of citizenship applicants during the interview process. The citizenship interviewer will ask the applicant up to 10 of those 100 questions during the interview process. To pass, an applicant must answer six questions correctly.
We also study the English vocabulary words that may be used in the sentences that applicants are asked to read and to write during the interview process.
Classes are free. ICOA will have a list of the questions and answers to the 100 questions and the vocabulary words that could be included during the citizenship interview. Students are encouraged to bring a pen or a pencil and a notebook to practice spelling and writing the vocabulary words.
The average weeks/months/years of attendance depends upon the students’ knowledge of the United States, their ability to study outside of class, and their place in the citizenship process.
The number of students in US citizenship classes varies from one to ten or more, depending upon the number of students interested. The time to become a US citizen varies depending upon how long the government is taking to process applications and interview candidates.
At the end of each class, we pray The Lord’s Prayer together. The teacher says a line and the class repeats that line.
“This country gave me so much. I met my wife here, my daughter, she was born here. I want to vote too.”
Classes are held on Thursdays from 7:00 – 8:30 pm, except during major holidays. Below is the 2023 class schedule.
